Coleman Burke

April 10, 1955 – July 3, 2021

Coleman Edward Burke II, Founder, bandleader and guitarist of Pride & Joy, the popular soul and funk party band that's entertained audiences for 40 years in the S.F. Bay Area and beyond, peacefully passed away on July 3, 2021, at his home in San Rafael.

Born in San Francisco, Coleman inherited his gentle, caring spirit and love of music and dance from his parents, Inez and Jim Burke . He was raised in SF's Richmond District on the Big Band swing and jazz sounds of Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Les Paul & Mary Ford. Jim managed the Hastings Men's Shop at the St. Francis Hotel. Vacations were road trips to visit Coleman 's grandmother and great aunt in Bellingham, WA or long weekends in Yosemite. Coleman was only three when his father died. His mother accepted a position with W.H. Freeman & Company/Scientific American. Inez loved musicals and often took her children with her to the Curran or brought home Broadway recordings such as Peter Pan, South Pacific and West Side Story.

Coleman spent hours listening to and watching records spin on the living room console or with his sister, Linda, playing 45s in the sound booth at Doughty's Records near their 14th Ave home. He bought his first Motown 45s when he was six. Listening to records and building his vinyl collection began early and became a lifelong passion.

He attended Argonne, Grant, then Marina and Galileo, when the family moved to Pacific Heights and the Marina. He was captivated by Motown and The Beatles. He took advantage of the burgeoning SF music scene, walking or hopping Muni to catch multiple headliners for as little as $5 at Fillmore Auditorium. In his late teens, he worked for Tower Records, studied music at SF State and continued as a Bank of America courier while building his band. The first album Coleman bought was "Meet the Temptations" on Gordy Records ("It's what's in the grooves that count!" as it says on the label.) This began a lifelong love of Motown and all things soul, inspiring him to form Pride & Joy. At the time, he said "nobody was really playing '60's soul music. I had never been in a band before, and I absolutely loved Motown and Stax. It was music I grew up with, so I wanted to start a band and play that kind of music."

Coleman 's relaxed manner, coupled with his witty sense of humor, put people at ease. He had an ability to make connections and turn them into lasting friendships and business relationships. Going out to eat or listen to live music, he met mentors, future band members and lifelong friends. The five musicians and four singers he assembled played their first show as Pride & Joy on Easter Sunday 1982 at Miramar Beach House. It was the perfect time to recreate the magic of vintage R&B and the ensemble sounds of the Motown era. Pride & Joy took off, selling out major clubs, Great American Music Hall, Last Day Saloon and New George's among others, and in demand on the party, wedding and corporate event circuit. Nearly four decades later, Pride & Joy continued to sell out engagements at San Francisco's premier nightclub, Bimbo's 365 Club, The Fox Theatre in Redwood City and Petaluma's Mystic Theatre.

In addition to leading the band and playing guitar, Coleman managed marketing, client relationships, booking and operations with minimal turnover in the band. He respected and treated his band members as family. The community he served ranged from A-list socialites & celebrities to Sports e.g., 49er's, Warriors; the Arts (SF Ballet, Opera, Symphony); City/County fairs & festivals; corporate & non-profit/charity events; weddings; and holiday & New Year's Eve celebrations.

Coleman 's interest in the arts and entertainment extended beyond Pride & Joy. His appreciation of music covered all genres and his record collection reflected that. He loved movies, especially classic films. His mother was an accomplished ballroom dancer and supporter of the arts. Coleman followed suit, taking dance and competing in Latin and ballroom. He enjoyed the SF Ballet, Opera, Symphony, SF Jazz Center and concerts of favorite artists/groups. He took acting with Jean Shelton and performed in local theater. He found time to travel to Europe, Asia and the Pacific Northwest to see friends and family.

During his life Coleman was in one band, Pride & Joy. It was a remarkable 40-year run. Diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer, glioblastoma, Coleman tolerated treatment well and did everything possible to enjoy the last year and a half of his life. He never gave up hope.

Pre-deceased by his parents, he is survived by his sister, Linda Burke (Anne) of San Francisco, his cousins, Gloria Rasmussen of Sunriver, OR and Penny Hammac (Scott) of Vancouver WA and their children and grandchildren along with extended family, Pride & Joy band members and friends.

The family is thankful for Coleman 's doctors, caregivers and hospice team. And grateful to his extended family and friends, especially Randi Swindel for her love and support. Thanks as well to his dear friends, associates and others, including fans of Pride & Joy, who spent time with him, kept in touch or otherwise enriched his life.

A Celebration of Coleman 's life will be held Sat., Nov. 13, 2021, 1 p.m., St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1755 Clay St. in San Francisco.
